NEW YORK 1860 CENSUS

These listing are by County, Township, and then by page listings to show proximity.

LUCRETIA PUTNAM  Cohoes, Albany County

She is 19 CDN living in what looks like factory housing. There should be a JOSEPH PUTNAM around town somewhere. He was from Canada, and was here in Cohoes in 1850 and will be in the 1880 census. Probably connected.

JOHN A. PUTNAM  New Scotland, Albany County

He is 27 NY, Catherine 21 NY. He is a farm manager. He would probably be the Augustus in Troy in 1850.

They are kids of Henry Putman and Ellen Mitchel from Amsterdam, Montgomery County. Henry died in the 1840s and Ellen or Eleanor married Peter Veeder and they were in Amsterdam in 1850 and here in Albany in 1855. In 1865 they are starting to get married here. Mary is married to Patrick Clifford here in Albany in 1865. But, in 1850 Abraham Vedder Putman, from Montgomery County, was in Lee County, Iowa and had a son Cornelius listed 13 NY then. Then the family disappeared by 1860. His son Wheeler is also listed in Lawrence County, Indiana in 1860 and in Effingham County, Illinois in 1870 and in St. Clair County, Illinois in 1880. Putnam who was here in 1850 and had L. F. Barton here as a border then. Think this is just a recording error. Emma will be in Tomkins County in 1870 still widowed and be using the Putnam name then. JOHN PUTMAN  Fenner, Madison County

This is confusing, I’ll explain shortly. John E. is 40 NY, his wife Anna Aurilla Dutton is 32 NY, and they have John E. Jr. 3 NY. Then there is a Laura Putman 25 NY and her daughter Viola 2 NY. Then we get his folks Aaron Putman 78 NY and Mary Eacher Putman 77 NY. John was born in Montgomery County February 11, 1820 and will die in Nelson, Madison County January 11, 1891. Okay. All these folks were here in 1850 living with his brother Frederick. Fred must have married Laura and died in the excitement of having a child. Then in 1870, Viola is living with a Josiah Putman (really Joseph, Aaron’s son listed next) and a Samuel Reese. The rest are self-explanatory.
